December 15 – San Francisco, California - The California Academy of Sciences' Morrison Planetarium is pleased to announce the Winter/ Spring 2008 Benjamin Dean Lecture Series in Astronomy. The topic for this month will be " The MESSENGER Mission to Mercury" by Robert Gold, Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University.
The MESSENGER spacecraft is on its way to orbit Mercury, a planet of extremes. Mercury has the greatest temperature variation, the highest density, and the most Earth-like magnetosphere of any planet. Despite Mercury often being the closest planet to Earth, very little was known about it because it is very difficult to observe and study. It has taken 30 years to mount an orbital mission to this terrestrial planet. MESSENGER has already flown by the planet twice. It has revealed exciting new information about Mercury's structure and the geological processes that have shaped it. This lecture will cover the challenges of developing a spacecraft to deal with the extreme environment at Mercury and show some of the amazing scientific results from the MESSENGER flybys.
All programs begin at 7:30 pm in Kanbar Hall at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California Street (at Presidio Avenue). Tickets are $5 in advance by mail or at the door. Please e-mail any questions to deanseries@calacademy.org or call 415-321-8000.
December 30 – Cleveland, Ohio - The Visitor Center at NASA's Glenn Research Center will provide opportunities to learn first-hand about some of the exciting work being done by the nation's aeronautics and space agency at the Third Saturday Events scheduled for 2008.
The monthly series provides an occasion for visitors to hear directly from NASA engineers, scientists and special guests during presentations held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month. Visitors interested in attending the presentations should call 216-433-9653 to register up to one month in advance to guarantee admission.

December 30 – Cleveland, Ohio - The NASA Glenn Visitor Center in Cleveland, Ohio will be hosting an event entitled: "Space in 3D" .
Experience space exploration in three dimensions at this special holiday event on Tuesday, Dec. 30. A large computer-driven 3D screen will display images and movies from space, allowing you to interact with some of the models and data NASA scientists routinely use. You'll find out how engineers design new spacecraft, go on virtual tours of rocket test facilities, see the crowded patterns of satellites and debris orbiting Earth, and observe the complex behavior of gases in jet engines. These moving images are as striking and inspiring as modern art.
Admission is free. For more in formation, please click here.
